Family of the Year 2010

Roy and JoeAnn Miller Family
Roy was born and raised in Salem. He has lived here most of his life, with the exception of the two years he spent as a missionary in the Northern States Mission from 1951 to1953. His mission consisted of Oregon, Washington, and the tip of Idaho. He thoroughly enjoyed his mission and the opportunity he got to meet and teach the people. Many friendships were established, several of which are still maintained. The most important friend he met and kept was JoeAnn Bowman. In fact he brought her home on the train following his release from his mission (well he did bring her mother along as a chaperone). They were married in the Salt Lake Temple two weeks after his arrival home, and boy was his mother surprised.
JoeAnn was born in Honeyville Utah, but her family moved to Oregon shortly after her eighth birthday, where she remained until she returned to Utah with her missionary. She has lived here ever since except for two years while Roy was serving his country in the Army.
Roy and JoeAnn have always had a love of family and friends. They both have made sure that the family stayed close – including extended “Greats” down to “3rd cousins once removed.” And if they can, they will find a relationship somewhere.
Roy is well known for all of the different sports he participated in and all of the co-ed teams he organized. Through these sporting events he has positively influenced the lives of many people. To this day Roy is still organizing groups to play golf (only because he can no longer run). Through his business he has sponsored many sports teams and his attitude has always been “just enjoy the game and be fair and love each other.” He always said the most important game is the one where you win good sportsmanship.
Roy and his parents started Miller Trailer Sales right here in Salem, before moving it to Spanish Fork, where it has continued to be a family owned and operated business for over 40 years.
Roy has been actively involved in many civic matters. He served on many councils and committees which include; Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, Salem City Council and Mayor of Salem. He has also faithfully served in many church capacities including Bishop of the Salem First Ward and the Salem Stake High Council.
JoeAnn is well known for her love of music. She was the Jr. Sunday School Chorister for over 10 years and brought the love of music into the hearts of many. When the church no longer allowed Halloween music in the church buildings, JoeAnn would have Halloween sin-a-longs at her house where she dressed up as a witch. For many years that followed, she became known as the Salem Witch. You can still ask many of the baby boomers here in Salem, and they will tell you about the Salem Witch and her Spook Alliess.
JoeAnn is a party planner. She has a Family Party for every occasion. If you’re a friend of anyone in the family you are invited too. Her motto is: “Guess who’s coming to dinner.” JoeAnn is well known for the Holiday dinner parties she has put on for the widows in town. And after many years was so sad to have to stop having them, because of her health. She loves the ladies so much.
Her love of parties, and decorating for the holidays, has inspired many people and she has become the envy of them. She loves it when anyone wants to stop in and sing along while she plays or just listens to them perform.
Roy and JoeAnn have love of people and they are loved in return. Roy has always said “if you can’t say something nice about someone, then don’t say it at all.” Roy and JoeAnn are the proud parents of 4 children: Vickie (Mark) Walker, Rod (Deb) Miller, Chris Miller, and Jenny (Mike) Dagley. They have 14 grandchildren: Josie (Dustin) VanOrman, Beau (Susan) Walker, Sammy Hall, Jessie (Alex) McWhorter, Kristy (Mike) Knight, Brett (Lacey) Miller, Biedgett (Chris) Cook, Brady Miller, Randi Miller, Lacey (Ted) Chrenshaw, Chase Dagley, Lexie Dagley, and Skyler Dagley. 12 great grandchildren: Maggie Mitchell, Gibb & Gracie VanOrman, Mason & Jax McWhorter Owen & Cash Crenshaw.
Together with their family, the Millers love people and Salem. Vickie, Rod and Chris are all living here in Salem.
Roy and JoeAnn have taught their children to share and give and do their very best and when asked to do something, you do more than your share.
