Highline Canal:

On the morning of September 12, 2017 workers along the Strawberry Highline Canal in Salem, Utah discovered a rodent hole in a side embankment which had resulted in seepage from the canal. Crews immediately responded and patched the hole.  There are no signs of any further seepage.

At no time during this incident was the structural integrity of the canal in question, nor was there any danger to life or property near of downhill from the patch site.

The quick response and repair completion highlight the ongoing and successful cooperation, coordination and collaboration between the Strawberry High Line Canal Company, City of Salem and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to safely maintain and operate this important canal system.  Strawberry High Line Canal Company quickly activated its existing emergency management plan, which facilitated speedy response and full coordination among partner agencies and stakeholders.

The Strawberry High Line Canal Company is lowering water in the canal and, with engineers from the Bureau of Reclamation, will conduct a full inspection of the canal during the next two days.  Strawberry High Line Canal Company is also conducting enhanced monitoring at four-hour intervals for several days to ensure the patch maintains a long-term and complete seal.
